Etienne Nillesen's exploration of the snare drum redefines its identity, no longer a mere tool for rhythm, but an autonomous harmonic and melodic entity that speaks in harmonies, textures and shifting tones.
This is not an extension of technique, but a reconsideration of what the instrument can be. His performances evolve slowly, with patience and precision, shaped by a deep sensitivity to the acoustic moment. At the heart of his practice is an intimate engagement with resonance, treating the drumhead as a dynamic surface that harbours a latent field of harmonics and microtonal interactions. Nillesen works with two snare drums, each tuned in close relation to its harmonic structure and physical properties, producing long tones, dense harmonic textures and pulsating interference patterns. Originally from the Netherlands, Nillesen now lives and works in Cologne.
