Born in 2002 in the town of Mjölby, Max started playing saxophone at an early age. After studying music at high school, he spent two years at Bollnäs Folkhögskola where his interest in free and improvised music grew. At Bollnäs, the trio Tisdag På Torsdag was formed, which is still an active group in the classic free jazz spirit. Max has lived and worked in Stockholm since 2025.
Other groups are Max Oskarsson Cromwell Sextet, where they instead have a more contemporary and improvisational language with a mixture of graphic notes, spontaneous conducting and completely free improvisation. Max is also a member of the Stockholm Improvisers Orchestra, where he has written original music for the group twice. In addition to regular groups, common collaborators include Sigge Andersson, Gustaf Berg, Dennis Egberth, Vilhelm Bromander, Isak Hedtjärn and Andreas Pettersson, to name a few. Common elements in Max's music are spontaneity and trust in his fellow musicians. It can also be loud and noisy, even if the soft notes also have an important role as well.
Max also runs the record label Brunstig Älg Records, which has released 7 albums with different groups since 2023.
