FRIM presents a duo with two of the most distinguished musicians on the European improvised scene in the new whereabouts of Fylkingen in Bredäng on November 20th.
John Butcher – soprano and tenor saxophone
Ståle Liavik Solberg – drums & percussion
Over the last 7 years John Butcher and Ståle Liavik Solberg have been developing two parallel projects; their intimate duo music and trio collaborations with a wide range of partners - Agnes Hvizdalek, Nick Stephens, Pat Thomas, Kaja Draksler and Barre Phillips.
The quartet STRAY with Dominic Lash and John Russell (on electric guitar) has released “Into Darkness" and a quintet adding Joe McPhee, Pascal Niggenkamper and Agnes Hvizdalek played the Kongsberg Jazz Festival.
They also have a quartet with Sophie Agnel and Pascal Niggenkemper that toured in Norway in 2022 and played this years Artacts festival in St Johann.
"Two high-class musicians talk to each other.. Butcher handles his saxes with enormous knowledge and Ståle Liavik his coordinated and «dry» drums with a wide register. The music lacks the anger that you can hear from many of Butcher and Ståle Liavik's colleagues. But who said you should be angry, especially on a record with this poetic name.

Ståle has established a base for himself as a central part of Oslo's thriving improvised music scene. Working with ensembles VCDC, Will it float? (with John Russell, Steve Beresford & John Edwards), Silva-Rasmussen-Solberg trio and in duos with Fred Lonberg-Holm and John Russell his open and attentive drumming has received many positive responses from musicians and audiences in both Europe and the USA. Solberg is also known as one of the driving forces behind the series Blow Out! in Oslo, and he curates the festival with the same name together with fellow drummer / percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love.
Born in Brighton and living in London, John Butcher is a saxophonist whose work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback, unusual acoustics and non-concert locations. He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with a sense of place. Resonant Spaces, for example, is a collection of performances recorded during a tour of unusual locations in Scotland and the Orkney Islands.
Butcher originally studied Physics, but after publishing a PH.D (1982) in quantum chromodynamics, Butcher left academia and took off with music. He has since collaborated with hundreds of artists, some for many decades. To name a few: Derek Bailey, Akio Suzuki, John Stevens’ Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Sophie Agnel, Rhodri Davies, Matthew Shipp, Gerry Hemingway, Chris Burn, Polwechsel, Magda Mayas, Gino Robair, Thermal (Andy Moor & Thomas Lehn), Christian Marclay, Eddie Prévost, Okkyung Lee, John Russell, and Phil Minton.
Butcher values both permanent groups and occasional encounters and operates within a network of artists also interested in the dynamics of spontaneity and shared history.
This work ranges through:
